ESEA Title I-A (School Improvement Grants)


Program Description:

ESEA, Title I–A (School Improvement) (NCLB Section 1003). The purpose of Title I, Part A of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high–quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency in challenging State academic achievement standards and State academic assessments. It provides financial assistance through State education agencies to local educational agencies to meet the educational needs of children who are failing, or are most at risk of failing the State’s challenging academic achievement standards and State academic assessments in schools with high concentrations of children from low–income families.

$260,037,000; in the '09–'10 budget, $127 million was appropriated for this purpose 

Entities Eligible to Apply:

Public school districts and charter schools 

Flow of Funds:

Funds awarded by formula from USDOE to SED. SED will flow Discretionary funds to Local Education Agencies (LEA) with one or more schools in need of improvement that have been identified in accountability status & Charter Schools using the existing Grants Management System. 

Obligation Deadline:

September 30, 2011 

Reporting Requirements:

Each LEA receiving funds shall report a school–by school listing of per pupil educational expenditures from state and local sources.
